James was born in Glasgow in 1899.

In the 1911 census, he was a boarder at 9 Kirk Lane, Newton Mearns with Mr James Paterson. He was still at school.

He was killed in France on 11 October 1918, aged 19 and is buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt Cemetery XIV. C. 13 Somme, France.
