James was born in Coatbridge in 1882. His father, Malcolm, was employed as an iron puddle worker. Malcolm married Elizabeth McVey in 1874 and they  lived first in Coatbridge and then in Paisley.

James married Catherine Flynn in Paisley in 1904 at which time he was employed as a brickwork worker. In the 1911 census he lived at 145 Main Street, Newton Mearns with Catherine and their sons Archibald and John. His occupation was listed as a carter with a coal merchant.

He was presumed dead in Belgium on 31 July 1917, aged 35 and is commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium  Panel 19 and 33.
