Finlay was born in Shotts, Lanarkshire in 1898, son of Mr James and Mrs Jane Cunningham, Toll House, Loganswell, Newton Mearns.The family came from Shotts and lived initially at Wardhill.  Finlay's father was employed as a road surfaceman.  

Finlay was killed in France on 4th April 1916, aged 19 and is buried in Norfolk Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, Somme, France - Grave reference I. B. 52.and is also commemorated on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.

Finlay’s younger brother James who was two years younger than Finlay was too young to enlist but joined up by giving false information about his age.  This was discovered and he was sent home but sadly soon thereafter, he was killed in an accident with a road roller.
