William Henderson was born in 1911, son of William and Margaret Henderson of Dunruben, Glebe Road, Newton Mearns and husband of Margaret Russell Henderson.

He was attached to 156 Squadron flying Wellington lll bombers out of RAF Alconbury near Cambridge.  On the night of 27th June 1942, twelve aircraft were deployed on a bombing raid, the target being Bremen. Flight Z1619, captained by Sergeant Owen, flying his 19th mission, took off at 23.13 hrs. This was William Henderson's fourth sortie, the first being only six days previously. The aircraft crashed at Westrum Kreis Meppen killing all six crew members. They were buried initially at the Evangelical Freidhof, Quackenbruck, but are now  buried at Rheinberg War Cemetery - grave reference 17.C.19. William is also commemorated on the Newton Mearns Parish Church War Memorial. He was aged 31.
