Born in Newton Mearns on 4th December 1920, he was the son of Joseph James Caterer and Annie Caterer of Newton Mearns. Joseph was educated in Oban and at Purley Grammar School in Croydon. Before enlistment he was employed as a costing clerk at Trojan Limited, the car manufacturer in Purley Way, Croydon. His regiment was deployed during Operation Mulberry and he was listed as 'missing believed drowned' on 12th June 1944 when crossing the English Channel. He was 23 years of age. He is commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial - Panel 11 Column 3, on the Croydon Roll of Honour and on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
