John was born in Barony Glasgow in 1888, the eldest son of Mr William and Mrs Janet Bryson. John’s father was born in Mearns where he was employed as a tailor. living with his parents, initially in Russell's Land and then in Wellmeadow Row. In 1884 he married Janet Hamilton of Eaglesham and for a time lived in the Barony district of  Glasgow.  William moved his family  from Glasgow  back to Mearns where John went to school. At the time of John's death, the family had moved again and lived in  Paisley.  

John died of meningitis in Basra in the  Persian Gulf  on 9th September 1917, aged 30 and is buried in Basra War Cemetery - Grave reference I. B. 12.
