John was born in Newton Mearns on 30th April 1892, son of Mr John and Mrs Jeanie Young. John was their second son and his father, born in Eaglesham in 1870, was employed as a carter contractor. His mother was born at Hogganfield Dunbarton and they married in Paisley in 1890. From 1891, the family lived at Bringans Land, Main Street,  Newton Mearns. In  the 1911 census John was living with his parents and his occupation is listed as a grocery van man but on 20th April 1912, he emigrated to Canada, sailing from Glasgow to Quebec on the SS Pretorian. His employment in Canada was as a farmer. He enlisted on 23rd September and was killed in Belgium on 26 April 1915, aged 22. He is commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaandereren, Belgium - Panel 10-26-28 and also on Newton Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
