David as born in Newton Mearns in 1890, son of Mr John and Mrs Jeanie Young. David was their eldest son and his father, born in Eaglesham im 1870, was employed as a carter contractor. His mother was born at Hogganfield Dunbarton and they married in Paisley in 1890. From 1891, the family lived at Bringans Land, Main Street,  Newton Mearns. In the 1911 census David was living with his parents and his occupation is listed as a grocery van man.

He was killed at the battle of Loos, France on 26 September 1915, aged 25 and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas-de-Calais, France - Panel 46 to 49

and also on Newton Mearns Parish Church War Memorial.
