George was born in Newton Mearns in 1897, son of Mr James and Mrs Hannah Welsh (neé Stirling). James Welsh was employed as a tailor cutter and at the time of George's death the family had moved from Newton Mearns and were living at 108, Albert Rd., Crosshill, Glasgow.

George died on February 26th, 1917 when the British steamer S.S. Clan Farquhar, on a voyage from Calcutta to London with general cargo, was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-43 (captained by Hans von Mellenthin) 80 miles north-east of Benghazi. 49 persons were killed. George was aged 20 and  is commemorated on Tower Hill Memorial, London.
