David was born in Stewarton in 1897 the third son of  Mr James Tennent M.R.C.V.S. and Mrs Jane Tennent. He was brought up in Stewarton where his father farmed Glenouther Farm and was the local vet. but at the time of David's death the family were farming Brownside Farm, Newton Mearns.

He was killed at the Somme, France on 20 June 1916, aged 19 and is buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France. Grave reference VII. F. 37.
