Thomas was born in Glasgow in 1895, son of Mr Robert and Mrs Mary Young Thomas' father was a plasterer. In  the 1911 census his family was living at 107 Main Street, Newton Mearns and his occupation was listed as a muslin drier at a bleachfield but when he was killed, the family had moved to Trees Lodge, Paisley Road, Barrhead, Renfrewshire

Thomas was killed at  the Somme,France on 28 July 1916, aged 21 and is  commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France - Pier and Face 15 A and 16 C and also on Newton Mearns Parish Church  War Memorial.
