James was born in Glasgow in 1893, son of  Mr Alexander and Mrs Sarah Menzies of 4 Ashview Terrace, Newton Mearns. John's father was employed as a labourer.

John died of his wounds at Gallipoli, Turkey on 5 June 1915, aged 22 and is buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Turkey  - Grave reference B41.  

The inscription which his mother requested to be put on his grave is:

 "Faithful is He that calleth you" 1st Thessalonians Ch5 v24.
