William was born in the High Row Netherplace, Newton Mearns in 1880, second son of Mr William and Mrs Margaret Melville of Netherplace, Newton Mearns. William's father, was a foreman bleacher carter and in 1901 William jnr. was a worker in the bleachfield.

William was killed in France on 26 March 1918, aged  37 and is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, Pas-de-Calais, France - Grave reference V. F.3. and is also commemorated on  Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
