James was born Newton Mearns in 1868, son of Mr James and Mrs Ann Aitken, of Russells land, Newton Mearns  In 1871 his Father was employed as a night watchman but later was a saddler in public works. James moved to Ayr and worked as a groom. He married Margaret Cooper in 1897 and at the time of his death, lived at 28 Craigmillars Buildings, King Street, Ayr. He died at home on 24 December 1917, aged 49 and is buried in Ayr Cemetery . The inscription on his gravestone reads “ Saviour in thy gracious keeping we leave our soldier father sleeping.”
