John was born in Newton Mearns in 1894, son of Mr Neil and Mrs Marion Keith McLellan. John's father was born in Campsie and his mother was born in Jura .It is likely that she had come to Campsie to work in the print mills.  In 1901 they lived  in Campsie where his father was employed as a navvy, but by 1911 they were living in Newton Mearns  at  Gateside. His father was employed as a roadman  but John was not living with the family.

John emigrated aged 19 in 1913, sailing on the SS Commonwealth to Melbourne Victoria Australia and then on to New Zealand on 24th December 1914 and his occupation there before enlistment was as a farmer at Grey Lynn.

He was killed at the Somme, France on 15 September 1916, aged 22 and is commemorated on Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial, New Zealand War Dead site and also on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
