Matthew was born in Newton Mearns in 1880, son of  Mr Patrick and Mrs Annie McDonald, of Newton Mearns who came originally from Ireland. In 1901 Matthew's father was a quarry worker. In 1901 the family lived in Scotts Land Newton Mearns and Matthew was employed as a shop assistant .By 1911, Matthew's father was dead and he was living with his mother, brother and sister at 7 Kirk Lane, Newton Mearns. His occupation was listed as a boot and shoe warehouseman.

He was killed in Belgium on 26 August 1917, aged 37 and is buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No.3, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
