Lewis was born in Barony Glasgow in 1882. His father was Donald McDonald who was employed as a joiner and his mother was Catherine Cross from Alvie Inverness-shire.  Lewis  married Elizabeth Clara Bell in 1909 in Maryhill and they later lived in Newton Mearns. In the military records Lewis' occupation on enlistment is recorded as a labourer. He was killed in Belgium on 9 November 1914, aged 32 and is commemorated on Ploegsteert Memorial,  Hainaut, Belgium  - Panel 5.
