James was born in 1898 in  Newton Mearns, son of Mr William (Gilmour) McAdam and Mrs Jane Blue McAdam who married in Mearns on 27th February 1885. William was employed at that time as journeyman joiner and Jane as a bleachfield worker. The family lived in Main Street, Newton Mearns.

James was killed aged 20 in France on 29 September 1918 and is buried in Targelle Ravine British cemetery, Villers-Guislain, France - Grave reference A17.
