James was born in Virgin Hall, Penpont, Dumfries on 25th March, 1897. His mother, Margaret Maxwell, died of influenza five days after he was born and his birth was registered by his grandfather who died later that year. He was raised by his grandmother who died in 1916. He then lived with his uncle Robert Maxwell who was a carter and lived at 2 Barrhead Road, Newton Mearns.

James was killed on 28 September 1918, aged 21 and is buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, Boisleux-St. Marc, Grave reference ll. B.16. He was a member of Mearns Parish Kirk and is commemorated on the Church War Memorial.
