John was born in 1899 in Kirkinner, Dumfies and Galloway son of Mr Samuel and Mrs Elizabeth Lang. His mother died in 1907 and in 1908, his father remarried Annie Hare. In the 1911 census the family is living at Fingalton Mill, Newton Mearns. John's father is listed as a grain miller but  when he died in February 1917, his occupation is given as retired fruiterer.

John was killed in France at the Somme on 20 July 1918, aged 19 and is buried in Marfaux Cemetery, Marne, France - Grave reference II. A. 10 and is also commemorated on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
