John Kirkland

John was born 1893, son of Mr James and Mrs Marion Kirkland. John's family originated in Ayrshire where he was born in Mauchline. His father was born in Cumnock and his mother in Auchinleck. John's father died in 1907 and his mother moved to Newton Mearns. In the 1911 census John's occupation was recorded as a horseman when he was living in the grieve's house at Netherton Farm. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1913.

He was killed in France on 15 June 1917, aged 24 and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery,  Pas-de-Calais, France - Grave reference   XXII. K. 22 and is also commemorated on the New Zealand War Dead site.
