Robert was born in Newton Mearns in 1894, son of Mr Robert and Mrs Marion Harper. The family lived at Polloks Land and Robert's father was employed as a roadman.

In the 1911 census, Robert was living with his parents at Malletsheugh and his occupation was listed as a bleachfield worker.

He was killed at the Somme, France on 15 September 1916, aged 22 and is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France - Pier and Face 6 D and

 7 D and also on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
