PROJECTS
The History Group undertakes specific projects to discover more about aspects of local history and to record current happenings for future generations.
Wartime Memories of Mearns
2009 marked seventy years since the outbreak of the Second World War and much has been written about the conflict. We interviewed people who lived in Mearns during the that time to find out how the war affected the Mearns area.
We produced a booklet, bringing together the wartime memories which they shared and have donated £500 from the sale of the booklets to Erskine. to support their continuing work with ex-servicemen and women. A few copies are still available from Mearns Community Library, at a cost of £3.50.
Mearns Today - a continuation of Mearns 2009
The landscape of Mearns has changed over the years, with the open countryside disappearing under buildings. We often find ourselves saying, “I can’t remember now what it used to look like”. The very large scale developments at Greenlaw and Patterton brought this into sharp focus and we have embarked, albeit perhaps a little late, on recording Mearns as it is now, for future generations. We would be very pleased to receive photographs and information which you may have of places or people in Mearns today. These can be sent to:- chairman@mearnshistory.org.uk or given to any committee member. We will return any items which you would like to retain.
Where do you live?
Much of the heritage of Mearns is hidden in the names of streets and buildings in the area. Have you ever wondered how the street you live in came to be named? Why not try to find out. You might discover something of the heritage of Mearns to share with the rest of us. Please contact us at: secretary@mearnshistory.org.uk.
On going Project
We have an on-going project to gather historical information, oral, written and pictorial, relating to the Mearns area. Material is recorded and stored securely in a database.
If you have any memories, family tales or photographs which you are willing to share, please contact us at: secretary@mearnshistory.org.uk.
We will return any items which you would like to retain.
